Colorbond® Steel Gates

Supplied via DuraBond, Colorbond® steel gates bring the same non-combustible fire performance as the fence system to gated openings in the 0–5 ft Zone 0 area.

What it is

Colorbond® steel gates are built from the same BlueScope Steel Australia system supplied in the United States by DuraBond, the official U.S. distributor. The gates use the same SMP factory coil coating (not powder coat) over galvanized steel as the fence panels.

Why steel suits the 0–5 ft zone

DuraBond states "Class A fire performance under ASTM E84" and describes the material as "non-combustible and does not ignite or contribute fuel to fire spread." BlueScope's fencing page states steel fencing "offers greater protection… against bushfire than other alternative materials because of its non-combustibility."

How we apply this to gates; stated plainly:

No California Building Materials Listing category exists for fencing; the OSFM program lists WUI products in categories like decking, windows, siding, doors, vents, and ignition-resistant materials. Firewise applies Colorbond's listed/tested fire-resistance characteristics to fence and gate assemblies based on comparable exposure conditions to listed WUI applications, and we say so plainly rather than implying a fence-specific approval that doesn't exist.

Certification language, exact: manufactured to AS/NZS 1397/2728, standards the supplier describes as comparable to ASTM A792/A653. We do not state or imply that Colorbond is ASTM-listed.

BAL-FZ scope limit: BlueScope publishes BAL-FZ ratings for some of its products, but that rating names roofing, walling, and gutters specifically; not fencing or gates. We do not use any BAL-FZ rating language from BlueScope on this page, because it would misrepresent the source.

Gate-specific reasoning: Exterior Doors as the closest OSFM analogy

Among the OSFM WUI categories, Exterior Doors is the closest functional analogy for a gate: a vertical panel that receives fire exposure from the same side as the structure it protects, with a matching test-protocol exposure profile. This is Firewise's own stated reasoning for applying Colorbond's fire-resistance characteristics to gate assemblies; it is not a listing that Colorbond itself holds. We state it transparently as our reasoning, not as a certification claim.

Gate hardware

A lockable keyed latch and hinges are included per the Zone 0 gate packages (see Zone 0 Compliance Packages). This is stated as what's included in those packages, not as a general Colorbond-gate spec beyond that.

Warranty

10-year material warranty, per DuraBond. BlueScope's own public materials do not state a U.S. fencing warranty duration; the 10-year figure is attributed to DuraBond specifically. Note that repainting may void the manufacturer warranty, per DuraBond.

How delivery works

A package means assessment, material specification, and coordination through our network of local licensed contractors, who hold the contract and perform the work. "Includes materials, tax, labor, removal and disposal" describes what the package covers; not who performs the labor. Installation performance is always attributed to the local licensed contractor from our network who holds the contract and performs the work.
